9/7: Mudcats at Hillcats

Seth Webster will get the start in today’s series and season finale in Lynchburg at Calvin Falwell Field. Webster is 8-7 with the league’s 3rd lowest earned run average (2.91) this season and was named by the Atlanta Braves as the Mudcats’ pitcher of the month for August yesterday. The side-arm throwing right-hander was 2-1 and posted a 2.31 ERA over five starts last month. He currently leads Minor League Baseball with a 12.86 K/BB ratio (90K/7BB) and leads the Carolina League in innings pitched (123.2) since May 23.

Blair Walters starts for the Mudcats today in their penultimate game of the season. Walters enters today’s game 6-8 with the Carolina League’s 4th best earned run average (3.00 ERA) 3rd best average against (.244) this season. He looks to lead the Mudcats to a 2-1 series lead with a win today in his 22nd and final start of the season. Walters made his first start out of the bullpen on May 6 and had has made 21 consecutive starts since. As a starter, Walters is 5-8 and has posted a 2.91 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. His 2.91 ERA as a starter is tied (with Seth Webster) for the second lowest in the league since May 6.

Matt Bywater allowed seven runs and nine hits over four innings pitched and took the loss as the Mudcats were defeated 8-4 in Lynchburg by the Hillcats on Saturday night at Calvin Falwell Field. Tanner Krietemeier and Carlos Franco were both 3-for-4 in the loss. The Hillcats pounded out seven hits and scored six runs over the first two innings while jumping out to their 6-0 lead. Carolina came back with a three run third, but never pulled any closer than a three run deficit in the loss.

Carlos Franco was 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs batted in last night for the Mudcats. Both of his RBI came in the third and with two outs in the inning. Franco has now collected 33 RBI this season with two outs in an inning. Franco currently leads active Carolina League players with 27 RBI with runners in scoring position and two outs. He is also tied with Dustin Peterson for the team lead in RBI with 60 this year.

Carolina continues its final road trip and final series of the season tonight with game two of four in Lynchburg. The Mudcats won the series opener 1-0 last night at Calvin Falwell Field and tonight turn to starter Matt Bywater in hopes of winning their third straight and taking a 2-0 series lead against the Hillcats. Bywater last pitched on 8/30 at Five County Stadium against the Hillcats and allowed three runs and 11 hits over just three innings pitched. Bywater is 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA over four starts since joining the Mudcats last month.

Yean Carlos Gil and Justin Jackson combined on a seven hit shutout of the Hillcats last night in Lynchburg. The shutout win was Carolina’s 12th of the season and brought them to 12-13 in shutout games this year… The Mudcats scored the only run of last night’s game and did so without recording a RBI. Connor Lien scored from third on a double steal in the first last night and the Mudcats held on for a 1-0 win. It was the only win this season for Carolina when failing to record a RBI in a game… The Mudcats improved to 51-22 when scoring first last night. Their 51 wins when scoring first are the most in the league this season.

The Mudcats continue their final road trip of the season with game one of a four game series in Lynchburg tonight at Calvin Falwell Field in Lynchburg. Carolina leads the season series 6-4 and last played in Lynchburg between 4/28 and 4/30 earlier this season. Carolina’s LHP Yean Carlos Gil heads to the mound tonight for the series opening start. He last pitched on 8/29 against this same Hillcats squad and turned in one of his finer performances of the season after holding Lynchburg to two runs and five hits over a (Carolina League) season high eight innings pitched. Gil suffered the loss his last time out after the Mudcats were nearly no-hit by Jayson Aquino and the Hillcats. Aquino is scheduled to start tonight for Lynchburg.

The Mudcats and Keys meet up for the final time this season tonight at Nymeo Field in Frederick. The series is currently tied at 1-1 after the Keys took game two of the series last night in walk-off fashion 7-6. Andrew Waszak gets the start in the series finale tonight for Carolina and returns to the Mudcats after appearing in two games with the Mississippi Braves on 8/29 (1.0ip, 2h, 1r, 1er, 1bb) and 9/1 (1.1ip, 1h, 0r, 1bb). Waszak last started for Carolina on 8/12 and earned a win after pitching through a season high seven innings on the road in Wilmington. He enters tonight’s start 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA over 24 games and 11 starts this season.

The Mudcats continue their final road trip of the season tonight with two of three against the Keys at Nymeo Stadium in Frederick. The Mudcats lead the current series 1-0 having won the opener last night 8-5. Seth Webster gets the game two nod for the Mudcats and enters tonight’s start at 8-7 with a 2.75 ERA this season. Webster is currently 2nd in the league in earned run average and leads Minor League Baseball in K/BB ratio at 12.14.

8/30 – Mudcats vs. Hillcats

The Mudcats play their final home game of the 2015 season today at Five County Stadium against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Hillcats have won three straight in the series and today the Mudcats will look to avoid a series sweep with LHP Matt Bywater on the mound for the finale start. Bywater enters at 2-1 over three games and with a 1.53 ERA with the Mudcats this season. He was signed by the Braves as a free agent earlier this month out of independent ball and made his Mudcats debut 8/14 in Frederick. Bywater last pitched on 8/25 at home versus Wilmington and picked up his second straight win after keeping the Blue Rocks to three runs and nine hits over 5.2 innings pitched.

The Mudcats enter today’s game 8.0 games back of the first place Winston-Salem Dash in the 2nd half standings and were eliminated from post-season contention last night. Both teams have eight games remaining this season, but the Dash will play two fewer 2nd half games having had two cancellations since the break.

The Mudcats and Hillcats continue their four game series with game three tonight at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats have dropped each of the first two in the series and three straight overall. Carolina will go with starter LHP Yean Carlos Gil for tonight’s game while the Hillcats will counter with LHP Jayson Aquino. Gil has won each of his last two starts and enters tonight 3-9 with a 5.91 ERA over 15 starts with the Mudcats this season. He tossed a seven inning one-hit shutout (7.0ip, 1h, 0r, 0bb, 6so) his last time out on 8/24 vs. Wilmington.

The Mudcats enter tonight’s game 7.0 games back of the first place Winston-Salem Dash in the 2nd half standings and have an elimination number of two (2). Both teams have nine games remaining this season, but the Dash will play two fewer second half games having had two cancellations. Carolina’s final homestand of the season continues tonight with game two of a four game series with the visiting Lynchburg Hillcats. The Mudcats lost last night’s series opener and look to even the series with RHP Brandon Barker getting the game two start tonight in Zebulon. Barker enters tonight’s outing at 8-4 with a 3.00 ERA over 16 starts this season with the Mudcats. Barker is 11-9 and has posted a 3.32 ERA over 25 starts between Low-A, High-A and Triple-A this season. He currently leads the Braves farm system in strikeouts (102) and wins (11).

The Mudcats enter tonight’s game 6.0 games back of the first place Winston-Salem Dash in the 2nd half standings and have an elimination number of four (4). Both teams have 10 games remaining this season, but the Dash will play two fewer second half games having had two cancellations this half. Winston-Salem’s final stretch of games include three at home vs. Frederick, three in Wilmington and four more on the road vs. the Keys.
